FAQs

Is Capoeira better than other martial arts?

All martial arts differ from each other and have advantages and disadvantages. The question is not whether one is better than the other, but which one is suitable for your needs. Capoeira is similar to some martial arts in many ways, but it also very different. It is these differences that make it special.

Is capoeira a martial art form or a dance form?

Capoeira was traditionally a martial art disguised as a dance, so it has aspects of both. Some people prefer to concentrate on the dance and acrobatic elements, while others prefer the martial arts elements. There is plenty of room for both in capoeira.

Do I have to be able to sing?

Singing is an integral part of capoeira, however you will be singing amongst a group of people with varying abilities. So don't worry about it and just enjoy yourself. You probably won't be the worst.

Can anybody train capoeira?

There’s a lot to learn in capoeira! It’s like taking a martial arts class, a dance class, a gymnastics class and a music class all at once. Every new student can expect to be good as some parts of class and be challenged by others. At CDO India we have classes for children as young as 4 through adults of any age. We believe everyone can benefit from capoeira as they refine their strengths and have the opportunity to improve their weaknesses.

Can I really do this?

Yes. One of the most inspiring things we see in capoeira is our students accomplishing things they never knew were possible. Our curriculum is structured and our instructors are trained to maximize the effectiveness of your personal training. We've seen this happen in our own lives, we’re excited to help you do it too!

What if I've never done capoeira before?

You have to start somewhere. We start by teaching you the basic movements and you take it from there.

I have never taken any type of martial arts or dance class. Can I still try capoeira?

Capoeira does not require that you have prior experience of any type of physical activity!

What if I am not flexible or in the best physical condition?

Don't let this discourage you! Capoeira is for everyone - young or old, short or tall, girl or boy! Of course, the more you train, the faster you will see results!

How long does it take to learn capoeira?

Think of it as learning a new language. The more of the language you learn, the more clearly you can express yourself to others. If your goal is to have a conversation with someone that consists of, "Hi, how are you?" and "I am fine, thank you," you should be able to do that within a month or two. If you plan to discuss world politics or philosophy, be prepared to spend more time learning the language.

What can I expect from a typical class?

Classes generally begin with an exercise to get the blood flowing to the muscles and increase the heart rate. This is followed by a series of stretches and practice of capoeira movements. The last part of class features a roda (pronounced ho-da) where students use the movements learned in the earlier part of class to improvise and play the game of capoeira.

What should I wear to the first class?

Capoeira is typically practiced in a traditional white uniform. For your first classes, wear loose-fitting clothes such as sweatpants and a t-shirt. Shorts are discouraged. You need to be able to move freely in all directions, including upside down and sideways. Capoeira is not practiced with shoes but you are welcome to bring sports tape to wrap your feet.

Should I bring anything to class?

A bottle of water, an open mind and positive attitude!
