Learning, thought, creativity and intelligence are not processes of the brain alone, but of the whole body. Sensations, emotions and integrative functions of the central nervous system are rooted in the body making 'movement' as fundamental as formal learning.
Our curriculum for children between the ages of 4 and 16 is broken down by age clusters and incorporates movement, martial arts, acrobatics, music and dance – all integral to the development of children. Learning blocks address the physical and mental needs of children within an age cluster. Learning ranges are minimal, and children don't feel the burden of having to keep up.
Music is to Capoeira as air is to breathing and there is live music all through a Capoeira class. Children learn songs in Portuguese and to play traditional Capoeira instruments. Through songs, they learn the Portuguese alphabet, numbers, common words and phrases as well as the meaning of the songs. Every class ends with an infectious, energetic sing-along where they all clap hands to keep time.
Games are an essential teaching tool in Capoeira which makes learning fun and challenging. Age appropriate Capoeira freezes with fun names like 'banana', 'pyramid', 'table', and 'hunter' keep things interesting.
They learn acrobatic moves from the very beginning, basic 'donkey kicks' giving way to 'handstands' as they advance in their training. It's hard to get bored playing capoeira! Skills children learn from capoeira can also be used in just about any setting that requires team effort – whether playground or classroom.
