Welcome to Batizado 2018
I am thrilled to announce the 13th Batizado e Troca de Cordao!
For the uninitiated, the annual Capoeira graduation, called Batizado (or "baptism"), is a week-long festival, celebration and testing that also enables visiting international Mestres (masters) and students to connect. Full of energy and emotions, this annual event allows students to come in contact with the many cultural aspects of Capoeira.
This ceremony marks the evolution of a capoeirista via their passage through the various cord (belt) colours. When a student is first baptized in Capoeira, they normally receive an apelido (nickname) based on a personal characteristic. This name is specially chosen by the Mestre in order to reflect the student's reality in the world of Capoeira. This is an old custom which is still in use today. Students who have already received their first belts move to higher belts during the batizado. This is called Troca de Cordão (change of belts).
Our international teachers this year are Mestre Cueca and Professor Mandingueiro, who will join us all the way from Russia and Israel to conduct workshops and test our capoeiristas. Mestre Cueca, as you know is my teacher for whom no introduction is required. Mandinguero has trained under CM Tamar and Mestre Edan and is a specialist in elegance of movement and an expert at acrobatics.
We will also be featuring for the first time ever in India, the air track, specialized gymnastic equipment to enhance capoeira skills.
Do join us. This is one week of Capoeira you do not want to miss.

Why should students attend the batizado?
Like every other martial art, Capoeira also has a belt system and the Batizado and Troca de Cordao is that event to recognize and celebrate the students hard work, commitment and dedication throughout the year. The belt ceremony is a reward for practising hard and motivation to continue doing so in future and inspires students to always keep learning new things. For our younger students, the batizado provides a very exciting atmosphere and participation in batizado shows gives them self confidence and improves self expression.
Why are international Mestres invited?
It is a tradition followed all over the world. A non competitive method of evaluation, where Masters hold workshops and play the game of capoeira with students and gauge if they are eligible for their respective belts. Mestres also evaluate the level of capoeira in India and thus our teachers and our country gets its recognition amongst others countries in the world.
What is special about the batizado this year?
This year, we are bringing the air track to India for the first time ever. The air track is specialised gymnastic equipment to enhance acrobatic skills in Capoeira. It's a perfect training tool that provides enough bounce for tumbling and resembles the feel of an artistic floor, used in international training methods of capoeira.
When is the last date to register?
Please register before April 6, 2018.
Are there any discounts available?
You can speak with your instructor for this information.
Can I get extra passes?
Please contact your centre instructors for extra passes.
What if our children already have the uniform and do not need one?
The uniform needs to be worn during all Mestre workshops and the main event. So you will definitely need an extra pair. The uniform costs Rs. 1000. If you still don't need one, you can inform us and we will reduce it from the package cost.
What if my child is too young to attend workshops?
The Batizado ceremony is a combination of the workshops and the belt ceremony. It has something for every child - it could be the excitement of receiving his/her belt, it could be the inspiration they get from the international teachers or a specific skill they learn at that time or the show will allow them to improve their self expression and display some skills they have learnt. Any way you look at it, the child has something to learn form this event. The workshops are conducted with the objective to evaluate the child's level through a non competitive format, to inspire and motivate them giving them confidence to participate so no student is too young or old to participate.
How long does one need to be a capoeira student to be eligible for the belt?
Students attending capoeira classes for more than 3 months are eligible to receive their first belts.
What is an apelido?
When a student is first baptized in Capoeira, they normally receive an apelido (nickname) based on a personal characteristic. This name is specially chosen by the Mestre in order to reflect the student's reality in the world of Capoeira.
Is the price different if I only attend the batizado?
It is a package and the price includes workshops.
What are the different belts?
3 months to 1 year of capoeira training - green belt.
2 years of capoeira training - yellow-green belt.
3 years of capoeira training - yellow belt.
4 years of capoeira training - yellow-yellow-blue belt.
5 years of capoeira training - yellow-blue belt.
6 years of capoeira training - blue belt.
At the blue belt the child becomes an instructor helper and helps their teacher in class in teaching movement to other children. Once a blue belter turns 18, they are welcome to join Capoeira India as a trainee and have the opportunity to intern with senior instructors in our school programs against which they can earn salaries/scholarships.
Will my child get a certificate?
Yes. A certificate of participation is awarded to all our child students.

About Mestre Cueca
Mestre Cueca started on his capoeira journey in the first year of high school. Mestre Edan was giving a workshop to the dance department and he used to watch and when he opened a group in Mestre Cueca's city, he decided to give it a try. It was love at first sight.
Mestre Cueca didn't start off with the specific goal of spreading capoeira. It just happened naturally. His passion and dedication for capoeira always led him to look out for more opportunities to play capoeira.
Professor Mandinguero
Mandingueiro comes from the African word mandinga, meaning trickery of the body using movement. An apt name for Professor Mandingueiro who can put others under his spell using his body and mind. He trained capoeira with CM Tamar and Mestre Edan and has been teaching for 10 years. His favourite part of capoeira is mastering the techniques and elegance of movement and he is an expert sans compare at acrobatics.
